Backpacks for Summer Success

One of our absolute favorite things at Arise2Read is our End of Year Celebration where students, coaches, teachers, parents, and administrators come together to celebrate student success. At the celebration, we present each student who has been part of Arise2Read with a Summer backpack full of books and educational tools to help them continue their growth over the summer (see flyer for exact backpack items). Studies suggest that children who read as few as six books over the summer maintain the level of reading skills they achieved during the preceding school year, so we include six books with the other items in the backpacks.

We could not do what we do at Arise2Read without the many churches, civic clubs, organizations, and individuals who not only support this program with their time but also help us raise money for backpacks. Each backpack costs $35, so for $35, you can sponsor a child for the summer. Last year, the community of Huntsville came together to raise enough funds for us to not only provide every 2nd grader in Arise2Read with a backpack but also EVERY 2nd grade student in the district! This is phenomenal! There were over 400 2nd grade students in Huntsville Independent School District for the 2018-2019 school year. Currently, there are 438 2nd graders enrolled in HISD. We are asking our community to come together again and help EVERY 2nd grade student receive a backpack this year. Together, we can do this for our children!
